Tulip time!

Midsummer and still far from spring. But in Amsterdam it is tulip time all year round, not only because of the familiar song. And besides, the beloved spring bulbs really need to be planted this year, preferably in September-October. Therefore, we would like to reveal a well-hidden intriguing address: the Tulip Museum, established in 2004. No tourist nonsense, kitsch or tales that the tulip would be typically Dutch, but a serious and fun little museum that discusses the history and the many cultural and historical aspects of the tulip through audiovisual and interactive presentations. The Tulip Museum houses a really nice museum shop, where you can buy high quality tulip bulbs and also an assortment of other beautiful bulbs, including dahlias, alliums (ornamental onions), fritillaria (plover eggs and imperial crowns), hyacinths and amaryllis. The Bollenmand also sells books on gardens and bulbs, as well as accessories with images of tulips, from umbrellas to antique tiles. An ideal spot to take your foreign friends and only a short walk from the Anne Frank House!

Amsterdam Tulip Museum, Prinsengracht 112, tel. (+31)(0)20 421 00 95, www.amsterdamtulipmuseum.com, open daily from 10am to 6pm. Entrance: € 4. Through the site you can also order and order to ship bulbs within the EU.

Just fine

‘As’ more or less began as a guerrilla restaurant, because owner and chef Sander Overeinder only  received a commitment for just a period of three years. These have almost gone by, but the good news is that the restaurant may continue, at least until June 2012. Its location is a bit hidden, at the head of the Zuidas, on the edge of the Beatrix Park, and is located in a round building that formerly served as the chapel of the adjacent former convent. Overeinder used to work for top restaurants such as Vermeer, The Karmeliet in Bruges and Chez Panisse in California. The latter restaurant is run by Alice Waters, one of the pioneers of the Slow Food movement, which promotes seasonal, local, artisan products. With restaurant As, Sander Overeinder moves into her footsteps, working with organic products from small, preferably local specialists. Regularly, two Gasconne pigs even scavenge in the backyard of the restaurant, who lead a good life with a healthy and tasty menu of kitchen leftovers. After about ten months the animals ultimately end up on the plate, as a responsible and nice bite. It's pure food, served in a stylish, simple furnished interior or on the pleasant, shady terrace of the restaurant.

Restaurant As, Princess Irenestraat 19, (+31) (0)20 644 01 00, www.restaurantas.nl, open from Tuesday to Sunday, for lunch and dinner.
